New Stele Forest

  • The New Stele Forest stands on the northwestern slope of the Eternal Peace Mountain. Here the boulders hare largely been weathered into a ball shape. From 1982, Xiamen Botanical Garden staff collected more than 400 high-quality calligraphic works by renowned domestic and overseas calligraphers and poets. In 1988 some of these calligraphic works were inscribed onto the boulders. Over the past ten years, more than 100 inscriptions have been added, resulting in a sizable stele forest. In the inscriptions include the handwritings of prominent calligraphers such as Zhao Puchu, General Zhang Aiping, Fang Yi, Liu Haisu, and renowned local calligraphers such as Yu Yu, Luo Dan, and Liang Piyun. There are also cursive-style calligraphic works by Singaporean calligrapher Zhou Yingnan and Japanese calligrapher Xueshan. “The inscriptions demonstrate the skills of master calligraphers and the poems eulogize the landscapes.” Among the inscriptions is a couplet – “The premier garden of Fujian, the world’s premier natural landscape.” The New Stele Forest has become a calligraphic exposition where culture and nature are perfectly blended.
